Brunei’s His Majesty completes fifty years of his succession to the throne today. Thousands of people, from all walks of life, lined the road where the procession of this celebration took place. Citizens, residents, as well tourists lined up in the streets of Bandar as early as 8 am although the procession was to begin at 10 am. It was a hot and a humid day but it did not bar the enthusiasm of young and old alike to watch this procession of their beloved His Majesty’s golden jubilee celebrations. Also lined up along the route were government officers, staff, students, youth associations and government-linked companies. Adult Bruneians including men and women mainly wore their national dress in colourful fabric and kids were seen wearing their best outfit for the occasion to show their love and respect. His Majesty’s Golden Jubilee celebration must be one of the most important and momentous events in the history of this tiny, oil-rich kingdom. Brunei has a large young population. Many of them were not born or were too young to witness last jubilee celebrations 25 years ago. For them – this 2017 celebration is a first-time experience and opportunity not to be missed celebrating a working monarchy. Many came with the country’s national flag, some were holding colourful balloons whereas a few creative went further and had the hand-painted picture of HM on canvas. Traditional music was being played as a part of the ceremony in selected tents along the street. Perhaps inspired by this, many onlooker women formed groups and sang songs in the Malay language. When HM’s specially made for the occasion palanquin was in sight, the emotions of the crowd ran high. Everyone was excited to see their beloved smiling His Majesty and Her Majesty and the Royal Family in their golden wardrobes.
